The four parents of Olai and Caroline Steen emigrated in 1870 and 1871 from opposite sides of the Norfjord in Norway to homestead several years later on the western edge of the Minnesota prairie near the border of North and South Dakota.  In 1899 Olai Steen, son of Sevrin Steen & Malene Isene from the south shore of Nordfjord married Caroline Storeim, daughter of John Storeim and Britha Björlo from the north shore.  Their eldest son was Sigvart Steen, who married Margery Mayer after the death of her first husband.
