Notes for Peter Ronald Moore Hutton
Peter was brought up in Greymouth. His first forename may have come from the Hay branch (paternal side). He was given his second forename after his uncle Ronald Edmund Guthrie and his third forename after his parents' Best Man, N.A. "Buster" Moore.

Peter received his primary and secondary education at Grey Main and Blaketown Schools (1936-43) and Greymouth High School (1944-48) where he was in the 1st XV Rugby, 1st XI Cricket and Athletics teams. He was Head Prefect, Senior Athletics Champion and Head Prefect.

He went on to the University of Otago (1949-52) where he attended the School of Mines and graduated Bachelor of Engineering (Mining). Following this Peter was awarded a postgraduate scholarship to the U.K. where he gained a qualification in Fuel Technology. Returning to New Zealand, he became a consulting engineer in the Mines Department based in Wellington. However, concern about the future of the coal industry resulted in a change of direction after a few years. Applying himself with his usual tenacity, Peter did further study and "converted" to Civil Engineering. He was subsequently employed by the Wellington and Lower Hutt City Councils and played a major role in the upgrading of the Greater Wellington water supply.

Outside work, Peter's interests included music, reading, property maintenance and home decoration. He was very practical and skilled with his hands.

Peter resided in Greymouth (1931-48), Dunedin (1949-52), Peterlee, Yorkshire, U.K. (1954-56), Porirua West and Lower Hutt (1956-81).

In the last decade of his life Peter suffered a great deal of stress and related illness, which contributed to his early death.
