Jock was educated at Auckland Grammar School and Auckland University where he graduated with B.A. and Diploma of Journalism. Following this he joined the New Zealand Herald where he had a long and distinguished career. After retiring as Associate Editor he used his expert knowledge of wine to write a regular column in the same paper through to the 1990's. In 1999, after suffering from a stroke in January, he resided in the Caughey Preston Rest Home in Auckland . (See Don Hutton's files for full biography.)
