Notes for Douglas William Guthrie
Douglas was brought up in Dunedin and Auckland, and was educated at Bayfield and Auckland Grammar Schools and Otago Medical School (1935). He held numerous medical posts including House Surgeon and Acting Medical Superintendent at Auckland Hospital and Superintendent of Green Lane Hospital, Auckland. He was also in private practice. He gained additional qualifications including FRCS (1939) and FRACS (1957).

Douglas built a two-story holiday house at Arran Bay, Waiheke Island which in 2001 is occupied by his son John and daughter-in-law Kay. He also owned a launch "The Isle of Arran," studied sea birds and was interested in gannet research. He was President of the Auckland Branch of Royal Forest & Bird Society.
