Douglas was brought up in Dunedin and educated at George Street School (enrolled 14 April 1890, left 13 November 1891; re-enrolled 2 February 1892, left 14 Dec 1898), Broad Bay School (briefly - 17 Nov - 22 Dec 1891) and Otago Boys' High School (1899-1900).
His occupations included Clerk (1910), Company Director (Guthrie Bowron) and General Manager (BALM Paints). As an adult, in Dunedin he resided at "Dunottar", 45 Claremont St, and in Auckland at 14 Ronaki Rd, Mission Bay. The name Dunottar applied also to the locality where Edwin and Jessie Guthrie both had homes.
