In 1881 Jessie was residing at Riccarton Mill, Ayrshire, Scotland with her father and siblings Margaret Edward and John. According to a letter written by her aunt Elizabeth in 1879, she was a pupil teacher and "got a nice school...I heard she had £70 a year."
