Margaret's mother, Elizabeth Bell, died following her birth. She went to live with her maternal grandmother, Hannah Whitby Bell, and was raised in the Bell household, South Melville, Prince Edward Island. She moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota with her sisters Annie and Elizabeth. Margaret was a single woman.
