Hans Rasmussen Frost, a weaver in Denmark until the American Civil War made cotton too expensive, and his second wife Karen Stine Jorgensdatter were the parents of Hemming Hansen, the second-to-youngest in the family.  Hemming emigrated to the United States in 1889 when he was 18 and worked for two years in Cleveland where his older brother Anders Jørgen had settled. He then attended the Seminary and became a pastor, serving parishes in Iowa, North Dakota and Minnesota.  Two years after his first wife died, he married Gena Ellingson; their oldest son was Reuben Bernhard Frost.  (In Danish naming convention, all the children of Hans were called Hansen, but when Hemming found so many Hansens in America, he legally changed his surname to Frost, taking his father's surname. )
