Notes for Henry (Harry) James Guthrie
Henry was brought up in Dunedin and attended Otago Boys' High School from 1883 until 1889. He began work as a clerk, but in 1896 founded the firm Guthrie Bowron Ltd. In 1902, as a witness at the marriage of brother Charles, Harry gave his occupation as Manufacturers' Agent. About 1922 he employed his niece Violet Graham Guthrie (Don Hutton's mother) in her first job as a typist. In 1928 Harry gave Violet away when she married William Barrie Hutton in Dunedin.

Harry was a prominent member of the Rotary Club and was a regular participant in the various anniversary celebrations of Otago Boy's High School. He bought a substantial property at Jeffery Street, Andersons Bay, built a large home and established a fine garden. The house has subsequently passed on to son Bruce and grandson Michael although the original property has been subdivided.

As a child Don Hutton visited "Uncle Harry" at Andersons Bay with Violet in the later 1940's. Harry was an invalid at this time as a result of the effects of Parkinson's Disease. Don has various photographs of Harry at the Guthrie / Hutton wedding and Otago Boys' High School jubilee functions.

Harry's son Bruce has written a history of Guthrie Bowron which provides further insights into Harry's life and relationship with other members of the family involved in the company.
