Notes for Violet Graham Guthrie
Violet was brought up in Waimate and Dunedin. She received much of her Education at Columba College, Dunedin where her tuition was generously paid for by the college matron and family friend Mrs. A.J.M. Walsh.

After leaving school in 1922 Violet was employed as an office worker in the family firm Guthrie Bowron which had been established by her Uncle Harry. About 1926 she joined the staff at Columba College where she was employed in the office and eventually as a teacher of typing.

Popular with family and peers, Violet enjoyed a full social life and made frequent visits to her Aunt Minnie in Timaru. Here she met her future husband William Barrie Hutton.

After marriage Violet moved to Greymouth where she and Barrie set up home first in a flat in Mount Street and then for the rest of her life at 24 Marsden Road. Although she was predominantly a home maker, she involved herself in numerous community activities including the Patriotic Society, voluntary nursing during World War II, the Returned Services Association, Greymouth Operatic Society, Karoro Bowling Club, Greymouth High School Fete Committee, West Coast and New Zealand Dahlia Societies, the Horticultural Society, the Hearing Association and Holy Trinity Anglican Church.

Other interests included family, reading, writing letters, music, travel, general gardening, knitting, and crochet. Her achievements included Junior Championships in bowls and numerous national, regional and local awards for dahlias.
