Notes for Charles Herbert Guthrie
“Charlie” was brought up in Dunedin, educated at Miss Forsyth's School, George Street School (enrolled 2 February 1885, left 17 November 1891) and Otago Boys' High School. The school registers recorded that his address was Elder Street, Dunedin.
He joined the stock and station company NMA in Dunedin, moved to Timaru and, after marriage, set up home in Waimate, South Canterbury where he became local manager of the firm.
Charles's untimely death was the result of a motor accident when the car in which he was a passenger had a tyre blowout and he was thrown out and crushed. He died at the scene. (Ref: Coroner's Report). His Monumental Inscription in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin states that Charles died in Waimate, but this is incorrect.
