Notes for Henry Guthrie
Henry was brought up in Drummochy, Largo, Scotland. He was a sailor there at 13 and a "carpenter of Leith" at 20. From shipwright he rose to second mate and ship's Master (1863) and Pilot (Melbourne, 1867). He settled in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand c.1864, eventually becoming a successful Ship Owner and Broker, Coal Merchant, Customs and Shipping Agent. He was a Member of the Otago Harbour Board in 1879-83 and 1892-94.

On 21 Apr 1913 he "expired" in Rattray St, Dunedin after collapsing while trying to avoid bad weather conditions. The informant was H. Gourley. At the time of his death Henry's residence was 2 Elder St, Dunedin. At some stage the street numbering was changed so that the house became No.7. The house was modified and restored in the 1990s.
