Obituary notes for Beatrice Ella Steen
Beatrice Steen Boe, age 97, of Reedsburg, WI died peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2007 surrounded by her family.

She was born on June 12, 1910 and raised in Clinton, MN, the youngest of five children to Olai & Caroline (Storeim) Steen. She was baptized at St. Pauli Lutheran Church in Clinton. Music, the Lutheran church and their Norwegian heritage were all nurtured in her family.

Beatrice graduated from St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN in 1931 with a degree in music. In 1989, she received one of the distinguished alumni awards. She treasured her memories of singing in the St. Olaf Choir under F. Melius Christiansen. She taught high school in Wabasha, MN for one year. She then joined her brother, Sig Steen, in the Music Department at Northland College in Ashland, WI. While at Northland, she met the young Lutheran pastor, Egbert T. Boe. They were married in 1934. Together they served parishes in Superior, WI, Sioux City, IA and Menomonie, WI.

Beatrice is fondly remembered for her directing many choirs in these churches. For the last ten years of his ministry, Egbert served as chaplain for the hospitals in Eau Claire, WI. While there, Beatrice became the first full-time voice teacher at U.W.-Eau Claire. Her teaching earned her the Medal of Excellence award from U.W.-Eau Claire. In 1969, they retired and moved to Mesa, AZ, where they helped found Victory Lutheran Church. Beatrice started another choir which she directed until the age of 82. In 1993, following the death of Egbert, she moved to 7500 York in Edina, MN.

Before his marriage, Egbert and several seminary classmates purchased a tract of land on Kabekona Lake in northern MN. The family spent most of their summers there bringing rich memories and blessings of time spent with friends and family. Beatrice spent the last 2-1/2 years of her life living in Reedsburg with her daughter, Judith. Bea not only shared her own gift of singing and teaching, she inspired and facilitated others to develop and share theirmusical gifts.
