Notes for Marie Dena Steen
After graduating from St. Olaf in 1926, Marie taught (English, according to Margery) in Moose Lake and Two Harbors. After raising her two boys, she taught at the University of Minnesota-Duluth (1956-71) and in the Duluth Public Schools (1956-71). From 1935 to 1960 she served as choir director at Bethesda Lutheran and First Lutheran churches in Duluth. Beginning in 1975 Marie served as organist at Victory Lutheran church in Mesa, Arizona.

Marie got into the spirit of our baseball interest, too, and could catch whatever we would throw at her. One day, in our Vacation Bible School, a game of baseball was being played. Marie was the catcher on one side and fearlessly stood her ground behind the plate with no mask. Predictably, a foul ball caught her in the eye and she sported a shiner for some time. The real insult, added to her injury, occurred when the unsympathetic teacher told her that it served her right for playing with the boys.
