Images of the Inupiaq: The Photography and Missionary Work of Helen C. Frost
by Julieanna Frost of the Department of History at Siena Heights University examines the photography and missionary work of Helen C. Frost through the tradition of feminist studies and historical social science research. [Note: The author of this study is not related to the subject of the study.] The report is available at: http://www.steen-frost.org/Pwd/Docs/Hansen_files/2008_Images_of_Inupiaq.pdf

“As the daughter of a Lutheran pastor in the Midwest, from an early age Frost felt called to help others. She studied to be a teacher and a nurse but eventually she served for thirty years as a Lutheran missionary, primarily among the Inupiaq in Alaska. In this role Frost wore many hats and had many experiences. This research used interviews, life history, and archival research. In particular, the analysis focuses upon her photographs and to her response to the Inupiaq. This research demonstrates that Frost incorporated aspects of their culture into her own life and unlike other missionaries did not portray them as “primitive others.” Her story highlights the broad range of diverse experiences in the history of Lutheran missions.”
