Obituary notes for Arthur Frank Berthold
Arthur Frank Berthold
1926 - 2002

Arthur Frank Berthold was born on March 13, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois to Arthur and Dorothy Berthold. Art's father and grandfather were both dentists. His father died when he was just 3 years old and then his older brother George died when Art was 17. (His brother George's Son Lynn Arthur and his wife Mary are here today.)

Art played basketball in high school and had jobs at Navy Pier and Wrigley Field. At 18, Art joined the Army and was sent to Korea to patrol the 38th parallel carrying a mortar during WW II. After the war he went to college and graduated from Northwestern Dental School. He married Jean Marilyn Cass on November 11th, 1950. They needed dentists for the Korean War so Art and Jean made their home at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. After that war, Art began his dental practice in Park Ridge where he practiced until he died on Tuesday, September 10th, 2002 at the age of 76. He loved being a dentist and his patients loved him.

Art and Jean raised 3 children: Bob (Mary), Barb (Joe Vercimak), and Rich (Karen). They went to all their school activities. Family vacations included Florida, Washington, DC, Lake Okoboji, Colorado, and Wyoming. Art and Jean loved to go to the Botanical Gardens, Morton's Arboretum, architectural tours, the museums and Shedd Aquarium. They both took very good care of their aging parents.

Art and Jean became very involved with all 10 of their grandchildren: Karisa, Rich, Laura, Bradley, Nicole, Joe, Adam, Zachary, Mindy, and Marissa. Grandpa loved to take the grandkids to amusement parks, the zoo, swimming, and to Navy Pier. Grandpa loved to have the latest electronic gadgets to entertain the grandchildren. The squirrels and the birds in the backyard were well fed. Art loved to learn and discuss current events. He loved Big Band Music and old time comedians. He was very active in the Northwestern Dental School Alumni Association.

Art was very supportive of all of Jean's work in the church. The church was very important to him. Art took very good care of Jean when she got cancer and was with her when she died. He talked often of how he looked forward to the great reunion that God has prepared for us in the life of the world to come. We will miss his contagious laugh and his warm hospitality. Art was a loving husband, a devoted father, and a playful grandfather.
