Notes for Robert Abigah Timmons
“He entered the Methodist ministry when about 21 years old, in Alabama. He was a man of conspicuous ability in the pulpit and became one of the strongest leaders of his Conference. His ministry of 43 years was marked with wonderful results. On the 8th day of April, 1904, he died in great peace in the city of Gadsden, Ala., leaving a wife and one son, Mr. J. E. Timmons, of LaFayette, Ala.”

-- Thomas Holmes Timmons, “Ancestral Etchings”

“He was received into the Confederate Army Hilliard Legion, [and] was selected as chaplain. The Confederate Congress released them, the home preachers, from the cruel law of conscription. He was advised by his general to resign and go home. He done so... [and] has continued the regular work of his ministry ever since.”

-- William Turner Timmons, Life Book (Appendix)

“I learned soon after coming to Carrollton that a Robert Timmons was a Presiding Elder (D.S. today) on our Tuscaloosa District about 1890. A middle-age couple here, members of our church, told me that he had performed their wedding ceremony.
