Obituary notes for Francis William Andrew
In our death column today we announce the death of Mr. Francis Andrew which occurred at his late home in Royalty East on 30th ult. [last month].

Mr. Andrew was born in Ayrshire Scotland in year 1825. He came to this Island when 27 years of age, having been engaged to take charge of Mr. Wright's mills in East Royalty. Since that time Mr.Andrew has been employed in several milling establishments throughout the Province.

Wherever he went he left the lasting impression that he was a man of exceptional merit and of sterling principle. "His word was his bond." By his manly conduct and integrity in all things, his spirit of philanthropy, and [his] general good heartedness, he won hosts of friends who will long remember his many kindnesses and public spirited acts of generality. He was indeed a "true son of the old soil" and died full of years and honor, having outlived the allotted period.

He was twice married. By his first wife he leaves three sons, viz: Mr. Frank Andrew, now of New Glasgow Mills, and Messrs. Adam and William Andrew who now reside in California, and by his second marriage two sons and four daughters, all of whom reside at East Royalty.

For a number of years past the deceased was an honored member of the Presbyterian church. He was also for many years a member of True Brothers Lodge of Masonic Order of Crapaud. To the relatives and numerous friends of the deceased gentleman the Patriot extends its heartfelt sympathies.

==========

The 1861 Canadian census shows Francis Andrew, occupation miller, living in Lot 67 on Prince Edward Island with his wife (Caroline Middleton Dixon) and 12 single individuals: five male and three female children [including Adam (b. 1858) and Francis (b. 1859) Andrew, Alexander (b. 1855), Caroline (b. 1853), Sarah (b. 1852), John (b. 1849), and George (b. 1847) Dixon], one male and one female between 16 and 21, and 2 males over the age of 21.

==========

The 1881 Canadian census shows Francis Andrew, then 56 (occupation miller), and his second wife Elizabeth Bell (age 34) living in Charlottetown Royalty (Family #862) with children Annie Jane Hay (age 8), John Bell (age 7), Frederick William (age 3), and Hannah Elizabeth (age 11 months), along with Janet Bell (23) (perhaps Elizabeth Bell’s niece, the daughter of her father’s brother Duncan Bell who was born in 1859) and Henry Roper (age 70) (perhaps a nephew or younger brother of Alexander Dixon’s mother Sarah Roper).

==========

The 1891 Canadian census shows Francis Andrew (age 66, occupation miller); his children Annie Jane Hay (age 18), John Bell (age 17); Frederic William (age 13). Elizabeth (Hannah) (age 11), and Viney Andrew (age 3), and a “domestic” Jane Bell (age 15). Note (a) that Hannah Elizabeth is now identified as Elizabeth, (b) that Margaret Bell (age 4) is not listed since she was living with her maternal grandmother Hannah Whitby Bell, and (c) that Viney is recorded as the youngest daughter in this family (even though she is actually the daughter of Annie Jane Hay).

==========

Francis emigrated to Prince Edward Island in 1852 (age 27) and went to Wright’s Mills in Charlottetown Royalty. After marrying Caroline Middleton Dixon in 1857, he went to work at Dixon’s Mill. They had three sons--Adam, Francis (Frank) and WIlliam--and one daughter, Ann Hay. Adam and William went to California where Adam became president of the Shasta Springs Water company. Frank went to the New Glasgow Mills. After his wife Caroline died in 1865, Francis moved to Elliot’s Mills as manager for his stepdaughter Mrs. Elliot (Caroline’s daughter by her first marriage to Alex Dixon).

On Dec. 29, 1871 Francis Andrew, then 46, married the 22-year-old Elizabeth Bell (1849-1887) and moved to Wright’s Mills. They had eight children: Annie Jane Hay, John Bell, Frederick William, Hannah Elizabeth, Hugh Allan, Margaret, and twin boys who died as infants. (Elizabeth had an older brother, Alexander, who was born in 1845.)

In 1898 Francis’ oldest son John Bell Andrew, then 24, purchased Wright’s Mills (also called Belmont Mills) and adjoining property, including Belmont House, from Benjamin Wright.

In 1840, on arrival from Scotland, Isaac Thompson (1817-1891) and his wife Margaret Raddick (1812-1879) settled at Wright’s Mills. Their son William Irving Thompson (1842-1908) was born at Wright’s Mills in 1842. Thompson bought Suffolk Mills in 1844 and moved there. William Irving’s daughter Georgina married John Bell Andrew.
